Aleksandar Sekulić, Milan Kilibarda, and Petar Bursać presented the MeteoEurope1km dataset at the EMS Annual Meeting, Bratislava, Slovakia, September 6, 2023. Covering Europe at an 1 km spatial resolution for the period 1991–2020, the MeteoEurope1km gridded dataset utilizes Spatio-temporal Regression Kriging (STRK) for accurate interpolation of daily temperatures (maximum, minimum and mean), total precipitation and sea-level pressure. MeteoEurope1km integrates data from GHCN-daily, ECA&D, and SYNOP meteorological stations. Validation demonstrated exceptional accuracy, with a coefficient of determination exceeding 97%, 98%, and 76% and a root mean square error below 1.5°C, 1.4 mbar, and 2.5 mm for temperature, sea-level pressure and total precipitation, respectively. This dataset will be used to improve ForestCO2 models, e.g. spectroscopy models for estimation of organic carbon in forests. Future plans include expanding coverage to 1961–present, interpolating additional meteorological variables, improving STRK models and use of machine learning algorithms.
